There is so much lore associated with brooms! Brooms can be used practically to clean cobwebs and sweep away dirt, as well as used to sweep away negative energy and evil spirits. Brooms have long played a part in wedding ceremonies, where the bride and groom “jump the broom” to seal their commitment to one another. We rarely if ever give it a second thought as we are sweeping up our daily detritus, but the history of the broom is fascinating. Here are a few interesting “facts” about brooms!
- Another Old English name for a broom is “besma,” which eventually led to “besom” which is another word for a witches’ broom.
- A broom hung on or by the front door will bar unwanted guests and keep negativity away.
- You should stand a broom on its handle with the bristles up so that “its luck won’t run out”. Having it stand bristles down, warps the broom but also allows “the magic to drain out.”
